Every year international development agencies provide billions of dollars in funding towards projects that spur social and economic development in developing and emerging economies. This continuous flow of funds is used to buy goods and services from all around the world and generates a broad range of export opportunities for Dutch companies. World Bank operations alone result in the origination of more than 40,000 contracts per year for goods and services, ranging in size from a few thousand dollars, to multi-million dollar expenditures. The United Nations system, consisting of a multitude of specialized agencies, procures more than 13 Bln $ on goods and services on an annual basis. UN Office of Project Services (UNOPS), UN Development Program (UNDP), UN Procurement Department (UNPD), World Food Program (WFP) and UNICEF (UN Childern’s Fund) represent more than 80% of that total procurement volume.

The investment and export opportunities for Dutch companies in the developing world are enormous, but market access proves to be challenging. The Royal Netherlands Embassy and its Consulates General assist Dutch companies in their business expansion through World Bank, IFC, IDB, MCC and UN financed projects among others. Together with NL EVD International they offer a wide range of services ranging from identifying key contacts and business opportunities to providing information about procurement practices and assisting in complaint procedures. Furthermore they attend bid openings on behalf of Dutch companies where possible and they actively assist staff of international organizations in identifying qualified consultants or suppliers with experience in developing countries.
